Here's a topic that usually ruffles a few feathers...

Do you prefer Mortal Kombat for the Genesis or the SNES?  I am talking generally about all the games in the 16-bit series: MK, MK2, MK3, Ultimate MK3.

I will be posting new reviews for all of these soon, but first I'd like to hear your opinions.

I'd generally say that the Super NES Mortal Kombat games are better.  Due to the fighting game friendly SNES controller, a better audio and graphics chip, they're as close to the arcade game as you can get on those systems.  MK2 is definitely the best, but the Nintendo editions of both MK3 and UMK3 aren't too shabby, either.

The Genesis version of MK2 is great, despite its more primitive sound and slightly grainier graphics and the controls with the 6-button pad are very responsive (the same traits apply to the Genesis edition of MK3).

As far as the original game, sure it was uncensored, but again, the presentation was worse and the controls were unacceptably stiff, even with the 6-button pad.  And Sega's version of UMK3 barely functioned properly; I had multiple instances when the game locked up and some of the fatalities weren't put in the game (you perform them, even with the one button code, and nothing happens).

I personally prefer..

Mortal Kombat (MK1) on the Sega Genesis. Not just because it's the one which features all the blood and gore from the Arcade version, but also because the clock speed and button input lag on the SNES version is all goofed up.

Mortal Kombat II (MK2) on the SNES. Even though the Genesis port seems to have better gameplay, the graphics and sound on the SNES clearly blows the Genny out of the water. At the time of release, I remember thinking that this was probably one of the best 16-bit Arcade-to-Home conversion that I've ever played (next to Street Fighter II). Acclaim did a very good job with this one, and most critics and gamers on the internet will usually agree that the SNES port is superior.

Mortal Kombat 3 (MK3) on the SNES. Once again this honor goes to the SNES. But this time the Super Nintendo port was far better in every measure. The visuals on the Genesis version were just plain grainy looking, and the sound effects sounded as if they could have been recorded from inside a trash can with a $20 lavalier mic from Walmart! Of course, it's not all bad. The gameplay is still there, I guess. But at the end of the day, the SNES version outshines the Genesis in every department.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (UMK3) on the SNES. Even though I've never actually played the Genesis version, I have played the SNES version and felt it was worthy enough. By this time, I had a Sega Saturn. So I was actually playing this game on that instead of the 16-bit consoles. But after just watching a video of it on YouTube, I'm quite content with my decision of the SNES version. It's much more colorful with improved sound.

I think overall I prefer the games on the SNES...but not by much.  The Genesis 6 button controller is much better for fighting games and the graphics are almost on par with the SNES games.  Also in the instance of MK II, the game plays a tiny bit faster and smoother on the Genesis game.  However, as a whole I felt that MK II and 3 performed a tad bit better on Nintendo's console.

Mortal Kombat - Genesis version for larger characters and for remaining true to the actual arcade game.

Mortal Kombat 2 - I grew up loving the SNES game.  It really felt like they packed the arcade game into the cart.  However, as I got older and began collecting games I discovered that the best version of MK II was actually the Sega 32X version...though it's not technically 16 bit.  It's still the best version you can pop into a Genesis or SNES.

Mortal Kombat 3 - I personally felt that the game shined again on the SNES.  The Genesis game was almost on par with it, except it lacked behind a bit in graphics and sound.  I still preferred the Genesis 6 button pad to the SNES dog bone design.

Ultimate MK 3 - Never played it on a 16 bit console.

I  generally like the Super Nes versions better, except for part 1. I like that on Genesis better.

I agree with Luke, I don't think the genesis version can even touch the SNES version of Mortal Kombat 3. I don't believe the review I did of it touched into the advantages enough.

SNES. The clunky genesis pad pretty much destroyed the controls -- and enjoyment -- of the games.

After MK1, the Genesis titles seemed to be watered down SNES ports. Less colors, distorted sound. It was simply lazy programming; the Genesis could push larger sprites without slowdown, and the color loss wouldn't have been a problem if they'd cleaned up the backgrounds after scanning them in.

Later, we'd see evidence of the Genesis's advantages when the same publisher sold WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game to unsuspecting consumers. Dropped without comment from the SNES version were Bam Bam Bigelow and Yokozuna.

The Genesis version of the first one was the best, but the sequels on Super Nintendo were better than Genesis counterparts. The SNES version of the original was only inferior because of how buggy and censored it was. Then Nintendo knew that if they censored it again the Genesis would only sell more and the SNES verions of the sequels remain superior because of their superoir graphics and sound.

I think whenever you compare a game that's on both Gen and SNES the SNES version is a bit better, but the Gen version is more impressive just for coming close. I always like to point out to SNES diehards that the Gen came out an entire two years sooner so I've always been impressed with how it managed to compete wit hthe SNES when it came to cross system ports like MK. So I admire the Gen versions more, although I cannot deny the SNES versions sound better and are a bit cleaner graphically. The 32x version of MK2 was the best ever but that was too little too late.
